Six Hours in Santa Fe

Before this trip, what I knew of New Mexico was limited to Frankie’s disdain for Santa Fe on season four of Netflix’s Grace and Frankie. Luckily I did not find a snake in my pocket once during our visit!

We arrived in Santa Fe early so we could make use of the entire day, stopping at Meow Wolf first. Liz found a Facebook post in the ever so helpful Girls LOVE Travel® group highlighting the attraction, and we added it to our travels. Meow Wolf is an immersive art installation made for all ages. A team of artists renovated an abandoned bowling alley into an art exhibit filled with secrets at every turn.

Before we even entered the exhibit, our ears perked up as we heard a call for a puppet workshop. Liz – my best friend, road trip partner, and dancer – added puppeteering to her repertoire about a year ago. The announcer was very kind and let us join the second session of a 4-part summer series in Meow Wolf’s Learning Center. I have to admit I was a bit nervous to perform in a group of strangers, but it was a ton of fun. I loved meeting each of the puppets and learning about the different types, and I got carried away with the skits. Puppeteering involved employing intention and mindfulness in ways I had not considered before, and I was happy to have an inside look into Liz’s new skill.

When we did enter the exhibit two hours later, the journey began with a mysterious Victorian house and clues left behind by the Selig family. I loved wandering through each room, touching different textures and ogling color patterns. My favorite part, of course, was twisting every knob and pulling each handle to find secret passageways to walk through.

We spent about 60-90 minutes exploring each area of the exhibit before heading towards Santa Fe Plaza. There we grabbed a quick bite to eat and walked through the art-filled streets, weaving in and out of galleries to admire the work. We popped into the beautiful Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi before making our way to our next stop in New Mexico!
