Truth or Consequences, NM, formerly known as Hot Springs, NM, changed its name in 1950 when “Truth or Consequences” game show producer Ralph Edwards announced the show would air live from the first town willing to share the game’s name.
T or C, as the locals know it, has since reaped the consequences of attracting tourists with a quirky name, and the truth is it’s a serene place to relax and unwind. The Hot Springs Historic District is home to the geothermal mineral baths that gave the town its original name and popularity.
Liz and I chose to dip into the private pools at the Riverbend Hot Springs Resort. Surrounded by wooden fencing on three sides, the fourth side opens to the flowing Rio Grande with the breathtaking backdrop of the Turtleback Mountains. Each cabana is equipped with benches, a cold overhead shower, and a pool filled with natural hot therapeutic mineral water. Each session lasts 50 minutes and you would barely know other pools are abundant with visitors as whisper zones are enforced to maintain the peaceful ambiance.
This was the first stop of our trip where I felt like we weren’t in a rush to our next destination. My mind enjoyed the relaxation, and my body, achey from being on the road, was grateful for the rejuvenating soak. This unique town is quiet and only home to about 6,000, but if you are looking for more than just relaxation during your stay, Elephant Butte State Park is not far away.
LOL so cool! I had never heard of this place!
Liz and I had never heard of T or C either, but stumbled upon it in our trip planning. It was nice 🙂
